Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) steam distilled leaf, U.S.A. Very refreshing aroma, woody and wintergreen, almost identical to Birch. Use with caution, the EO is approximately 99% methyl salicylate, the main ingredient in aspirin (irritant, sensitizing). Many aroma therapists try to stay away from this oil. Methyl salicylate has been incorporated into liniments and ointments for muscular skeletal problems. Use tiny amounts in muscle/joint blends, patch test. Not recommended for usage in persons who take aspirin regularly or who are allergic to aspirin.
Blends well with pine, peppermint, and lemon.
Cautions: Pure oil of wintergreen can cause irritation and must be used cautiously. It is poisonous except in very small amounts. Essential oil is highly toxic; absorbed through skin, harms liver and kidneys. Wintergreen should never be used during pregnancy.
Uses: Always use the patch test first before trying oil. If not allergic use 1-2 drops of oil per ounce of carrier oil or lotion for external application to eczema, acne, blemishes or external skin problems
